Foster Falls is one of those rare places that delivers on every level. A dramatic 60-foot waterfall plunging into a crystal-clear swimming hole. Miles of hiking trails through old-growth forest. World-class rock climbing on sandstone cliffs. And it’s all free, with easy parking and facilities.
Located just 30 minutes from Chattanooga in South Cumberland State Park, Foster Falls draws visitors from across the Southeast. And if you’re staying at fosters cabins, it’s literally 2 minutes down the road.
Getting There
Address: Foster Falls Recreation Area, Sequatchie, TN 37374
From Chattanooga, take I-24 west to exit 134 (Monteagle). Head south on US-41 toward Jasper. The Foster Falls parking area is well-signed on your right, about 15 miles from the interstate.
Parking: Free and ample. The main lot rarely fills except on peak summer weekends.
Facilities: Restrooms at the trailhead, plus a 26-site campground nearby.
Admission: Free.
The Waterfall & Swimming Hole
The main attraction is the 60-foot waterfall cascading into a deep pool at the base. It’s one of the most impressive waterfalls in Tennessee and one of the best swimming holes in the region.
The hike to the base of the falls is short—about 0.3 miles from the parking lot via a series of stairs and switchbacks carved into the cliff. The trail is steep but well-maintained.
Swimming: The pool at the base is deep enough for jumping (from designated spots) and perfect for cooling off on hot days. The water stays cold year-round thanks to the shaded gorge.
Best time to swim: Late spring through early fall. Summer weekends get crowded—arrive early or visit on weekdays for a quieter experience.
Water flow: The falls run year-round, but flow is strongest after rain and in spring. By late summer, the cascade may thin to a trickle during dry spells.
Hiking Trails
Foster Falls is a gateway to some of the best hiking in South Cumberland.
Climber’s Loop (2 miles)
This moderate loop follows the cliff line past the top of the falls, offering views into the gorge and access to climbing areas. You’ll see mountain laurel and azaleas blooming in spring. The trail connects back to the parking area, making it a perfect short hike.
Foster Falls to Small Wilds (5 miles)
A longer option that takes you past additional waterfalls and overlooks. This out-and-back hike extends along the rim with stunning views of the gorge below.
Fiery Gizzard Trail Connection
Foster Falls is the southern terminus of the legendary Fiery Gizzard Trail—a 12.5-mile point-to-point hike rated one of the top 25 trails in America by Backpacker Magazine. Thru-hikers finish their trek right here at Foster Falls.
Rock Climbing
Foster Falls is a major destination for sport climbing in the Southeast. The sandstone cliffs surrounding the gorge offer over 150 established routes ranging from beginner-friendly 5.5s to challenging 5.14s.
The climbing here tends toward more moderate grades compared to nearby Denny Cove, making it a good option for warming up or for climbers working in the 5.8 to 5.11 range.
Key areas:
- Routes along the Climber’s Loop trail
- Walls above and around the falls
- Various sectors accessible from the main trail

Best Time to Visit
Summer: Peak swimming season. Expect crowds on weekends—arrive early. The gorge provides shade, keeping temps cooler than surrounding areas.
Spring (April-May): Wildflowers along the trails, strong waterfall flow, comfortable hiking temps. Mountain laurel blooms are spectacular.
Fall (October-November): Fall color on the plateau is stunning. Great hiking and climbing weather. Swimming gets cold but the views are worth it.
Winter: Quieter trails, occasional ice formations on the falls. Water is too cold for swimming, but the stark winter landscape has its own beauty.
