Greeter Falls packs an incredible amount of scenery into a short hike. In just over a mile, you’ll pass two waterfalls—a charming 15-foot upper cascade and an impressive 50-foot lower plunge—plus one of the best swimming holes in Tennessee.
The “Blue Hole” at the base of Lower Greeter Falls is deep, clear, and calm enough for swimming, with cliff jumping spots for the adventurous. It’s the kind of place that makes you understand why people fall in love with South Cumberland.
Trail Overview
Distance: 1.2-mile loop Difficulty: Moderate Elevation gain: ~240 feet Time: 30 minutes to 1 hour (longer if you swim) Location: Savage Gulf State Natural Area
The trail is well-marked and mostly straightforward, but it earns its “moderate” rating through rocky sections, wooden steps, and the iconic spiral metal staircase that descends to the lower falls. Sturdy footwear is recommended.
Getting There
Trailhead: Greeter Falls Parking Area, Altamont, TN
From fosters cabins, head north on US-41 through Tracy City, then follow signs toward Savage Gulf / Greeter Falls. The drive is approximately 40-50 minutes.
Parking: Free lot at the trailhead. Can fill up on summer weekends—arrive early.
The Waterfalls
Upper Greeter Falls (15 feet)
The first waterfall you’ll encounter. A pretty cascade dropping into a small pool. Worth a stop and photos, but the main event is below.
Lower Greeter Falls (50 feet)
The showstopper. A powerful 50-foot plunge into the Blue Hole—a deep, clear swimming pool framed by sandstone cliffs. The spiral staircase that descends to this area is an experience in itself, winding down the rock face with views of the falls the whole way.
Boardtree Falls
A bonus waterfall on the loop trail. Smaller but scenic, adding to the overall waterfall count for the hike.
The Blue Hole
The swimming hole at the base of Lower Greeter Falls is the highlight for many visitors. The pool is:
- Deep enough for safe jumping from designated spots
- Clear and cold (refreshing in summer)
- Calm enough for casual swimming
- Surrounded by cliffs with multiple cliff-jumping spots
Safety note: Check water depth before jumping. Conditions change with water levels. The rocks can be slippery—watch your footing.
Trail Description
- Start: The trail begins flat and easy, winding through hardwood forest
- Upper Falls: After a short walk, you’ll reach the upper cascade
- Descent: Wooden steps and the famous spiral staircase lead down into the gorge
- Lower Falls & Blue Hole: The main attraction—swim, photograph, or just take in the view
- Loop return: The trail climbs back up and loops to the parking area via Boardtree Falls
The rocky sections and stairs require attention, especially when wet. Take your time on the descent.
Best Time to Visit
Spring: Strongest waterfall flow after winter rains. Wildflowers blooming. Water may be too cold for comfortable swimming.
Summer: Peak swimming season. The Blue Hole is perfect for cooling off. Weekends get crowded—arrive early or visit weekdays.
Fall: Beautiful leaf color. Water flow decreases but falls still run. Swimming gets cold.
Winter: Quietest time. Occasional ice formations on the falls. Not swimming weather, but dramatic scenery.
